About the Client

Simmons Civil is a Gladstone-based civil construction company. They support industrial sites, councils, and the local port across a range of projects that require their skilled teams, advanced equipment, and dedication to quality.

The Brief

I completed this project via my other business, The Digital Brew, in partnership with my husband and web designer extraordinaire, Stew.

We worked closely with Renee from Simmons Civil to put together a plan for upgrading their existing website. Their first website had been an in-house job and they were keen to up-level their brand with professional messaging and visuals (in line with the growth in their business). They were keen to ensure the brand came across as professional and trusted, and wanted to better explain the services on offer so that it would support any word-of-mouth referrals with the info needed to take the next step (and hopefully show up better in Google). It was also important that they’d be clearly differentiated from another business with the same name (but a different location). With significant ongoing growth in the business, they were also keen to support any recruitment efforts via the website.

The Work

My involvement in this project was focused on SEO strategy, brand messaging, and website copy. I conducted keyword research to recommend appropriate keywords for each page of the website, and developed brand voice guidelines, a USP, and key messages. Then I drafted the copy for each page, including Home, ABout, Team, Services, Careers, and Contact.

I was careful to include plenty of location mentions (including maps) to make it clear that this was the Gladstone/Queensland Simmons Civil company. Messaging on the careers page focused on culture and benefits, with a section dedicated to current openings. To help with building trust, I included information on ISO accreditation, as well as testimonials.

We also set up interviews with the team members (a mixture of via online surveys and phone calls) to collect data and stories for team bios and case studies.

Stewart was responsible for interpreting the copy and layouts to create design mockups for the client’s approval, before developing the WordPress site and functionality.
